Tidbits On How I Edit Audio

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Here’s how I edit audio.

  1. I currently edit using two programs,

    Audacity

    and

    GoldWave.

I use GoldWave to edit the actual content, and I use Audacity to assemble the podcast episode and do my sound processing thing.
  2. Regarding interviews, I appreciate it when clients send me stereo recordings. All that means, in the case of an interviewer and one interviewee, is that I have one voice coming out of the left speaker and the other voice coming through the right speaker. I put everything in the center after editing.
  3. When exporting from any of the programs mentioned above, I always choose wave.
  4. Conversion to MP3 is done with ITunes, and tagging is done with MP3 TAG.
  5. My starting sound processing workflow consists of:

    • normalizing
    • compression
    • EQ, [bass boost]
    • EQ, [trebble boost]
    • compression
    • normalizing
    • limiting
    • normalizing

When necessary, I add noise reduction to that.

Why did I use the phrase “starting sound processing workflow”? Because sometimes, the result doesn’t sound presentable. After deciding that the result doesn’t sound presentable, I modify that process. An example of that might be:

  • normalizing
  • compression
  • EQ, [bass boost]
  • compression
  • normalizing
  • limiting
  • normalizing

Is this too much geekspeak for you? Hire me and you won’t have to worry about that. Your audio will be in good hands.
